Castleford Academy Succeed under hard-hitting OFSTED reforms
Castleford Academy OFSTED praise
Castleford Academy was judged 'Good' in its most recent inspection by OFSTED on 24th and 25th September 2014. The inspection was one of the first in the region undertaken under the new regulations which became effective on the 1st of September 2014. The lead OFSTED inspector explained that the Academy was on course to achieve an 'Outstanding' rating in its next inspection. The inspectors also recognised the 'astounding' attainment of pupils in the summer with the school achieving its best ever results (64% 5A*- C including English & mathematics). The school was given a 'Good' rating for each of the categories- overall effectiveness, leadership, teaching & learning and behaviour. They were particularly complimentary about the behaviour of pupils and recognised that 'the pastoral care of students is excellent' and that pupils are 'immaculately dressed, prepared for lessons with the right equipment, courteous to each other and appear happy at all times'.
Despite their praise for the Sixth Form, which was commended for the achievement of pupils studying vocational courses (last year's results placed the college in the top 13% of colleges nationally), the inspectors advised that the progress of the few students who re-sit Mathematics and English needs to improve further. As a result of the inspection, the Department for Education and the regional school OFSTED commissioner has approved the Academy as a sponsor to support schools who are not yet 'Good'. Headteacher George Panayiotou added, "I would like to take this opportunity of publicly thanking all pupils, staff, parents and governors for their dedication and support of the school. This achievement is particularly impressive given the challenges schools face and the volatility in the exam series. The school continues to improve, evidenced from the achievements in school both academic, sporting, cultural." Chair of Trustees and Governors, Bill Clift MBE offered, "Well done to staff, pupils and parents! Despite the significant changes to the OFSTED criteria in the last 12 months, our academy has positively responded and received a 'Good' report.
This year, GCSE results are the best ever, which says a lot about the teaching and learning in this Academy. Pupils have only one opportunity to receive a good education and I feel that the Academy provides this for our pupils, which will continue for many years to come".
