Toronto Tour

Castleford Academy has teamed up with Toronto Wolfpack to launch a partnership that has inspired a group of 25 girls rugby players who are touring Toronto in October.

Toronto were first contacted by Castleford Academy to explore possible ways in which they could support the Academy on their forthcoming trip. They soon discovered that the Wolfpack organisation is driven by the belief that "the world is a better place with more rugby balls in kids hands."

The forward thinking Championship side took no time in arranging for four of their players, (Nick Rawsthorne, Tom Olbison, Gadwin Springer and Richard Whiting) to attend Castleford Academy on Wednesday 11th September to run a coaching session for the highly successful girls going on tour.  In addition to this, their newly appointed chairman and CEO, Bob Hunter, flew in from Canada that morning to present the girls with a complimentary replica shirt.

This is a pioneering move from Castleford Academy, in particular their PE department, who are renowned for providing their pupils with exceptional opportunities for sport and exposure to the world.

Castleford Academy are currently the highest achieving rugby league school in the country, with over 70 of their teams (both boys and girls) reaching the RFL Champion Schools National Finals since the competition evolved.

Castleford Academy are always seeking ways to provide their pupils with once in a lifetime experiences.  Mr Panayiotou, Headteacher said "We are excited for our Y9 & Y10 girls to be the first UK school to tour Canada to play rugby league. The opportunity to play rugby, build friendships and learn about new cultures in Canada will be one they never forget".

The girls success follows in the footsteps of ex pupils Hollie Dodd, who this year became the youngest ever player to make a super league debut for Castleford Tigers Women in the Challenge Cup Final and Jodie Wilkinson, who followed up her 2019 National Amateur Women's Championship, to become a Great Britain Tri Nations Elite Champion and has now been selected as a member of the World Class Program for Team GB Boxing.  A great achievement for Castleford Girls! #thesegirlscan.
